BADSHAHBOOK: Mumbai Indians secured a comprehensive 5-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders in the first of two IPL 2023 matches on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The Blue and Gold Brigade chased down a total of 186 with 14 balls to spare, thanks to blistering half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav.
While Venkatesh Iyer's unbeaten 104 off 51 balls was the standout innings of the day, unfortunately for the Kolkata Knight Riders, it came in a losing cause. Iyer became just the second player from the team to score a T20 century after Brendon McCullum's 158* in the first-ever IPL match in 2008.
However, his teammates failed to match his tempo, and it was left to Andre Russell's 21* off 11 to push the score past 180.
Mumbai Indians started their chase in emphatic fashion, with Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan putting on 65 runs in just 4.5 overs before Rohit was dismissed by Suyash Sharma. The stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav then took charge, easing the pressure with a quick-fire 43 off 25 balls, before Tim David and Cameron Green finished off the chase for Mumbai Indians.
The win was Mumbai Indians' second in a row, taking them to 4 points from 4 matches and placing them in eighth place on the table. Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, are in fifth place with four points from five matches.
