Matheesha Pathirana was the standout bowler for CSK, taking three wickets for just 15 runs and limiting MI to a total of 139 for 8. On the MI side, Nehal Wadhera scored his maiden IPL fifty off 46 deliveries and was the standout performer for his team.
At the toss, CSK won and elected to bowl first. MI lost their top three batsmen - Ishan Kishan, Cameron Green, and Rohit Sharma - within the powerplay.
Wadhera and Suryakumar Yadav then stitched together a fifty-run partnership for the fourth wicket, but MI's scoring rate slowed down after Wadhera's dismissal. CSK fielded an unchanged XI, while MI brought in South African batsman Tristan Stubbs to replace the unwell Tilak Verma.
This match was the second encounter between the two teams in IPL 2023, with CSK having won the previous match by seven wickets. As the two heavyweights faced off in the rivalry week, MI was looking to settle a score after their earlier defeat.
The wickets at Chidambaram stadium had been a mixed bag so far, and the kind of track prepared for the match could have played a crucial role in the proceedings.
CSK came into the match after a washed-out game against Lucknow and two successive defeats to Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings.
Although the top-order batters, Conway and Gaikwad, had provided strong starts, the middle-order had not always capitalized on them.
