Day 21, Match 28, KKR vs DC, IPL 2023
BADSHAHBOOK: On April 20, 2023, the Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by four wickets in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The DC had lost their last five matches and were desperate for a win to stay afloat in the tournament. KKR batted first but struggled on a pitch that aided both pacers and spinners, posting a modest score of 127. In response, skipper David Warner found his perfect hitting arc and smashed 57 off 41 balls to lead DC to victory.
Warner had been struggling with his strike rate in earlier games but found his form just in time for the crucial match against KKR. DC's lineup of batting, except Warner, looked insecure once again, but a substandard score from KKR eventually saved the day for the home team. The ball began grasping in the later stage of the chase, making it uneasy for the stroke play. Despite a groin strain, Axar Patel managed to guide DC past the finishing line with 19 not out off 22 balls.
The key to DC's victory was the performances of two veterans, Ishant Sharma and Warner, in the Powerplay. Ishant, aged 34, hadn't played an IPL match in over two seasons, but he relied on his experience to restrict KKR during the 'Bowling Powerplay'. He finished with figures of 2/19 in 4 overs. Meanwhile, the 36-year-old Warner showed his destructive avatar by hitting 10 boundaries in the 'Batting Powerplay' to put the game beyond KKR's reach.
Warner's sweeping was particularly effective, as the two KKR spinners, Sunil Narine and Anukul Roy, had no answers. He hit a total of 11 boundaries in his innings. The win was important for DC, but it did not alter their position at the bottom of the points table. Nonetheless, it gave them hope for a turnaround.
After winning the toss, Warner chose to field first, and Ishant was immediately banging on target. He bowled 13 dot balls and hit immaculate three-quarter lengths, similar to his performance the previous day. Mukesh Kumar also bowled well in the Powerplay, and Axar removed the dangerous Rinku Singh as KKR lost wickets in clumps.
In the first 10 overs, Kuldeep Yadav was brilliant, taking 2/15 in 3 overs and dismissing Jason Roy. Anrich Nortje bowled an ideal Test match length, and the grass covering the pitch helped in a bit of deviation. Venkatesh Iyer managed to edge one to first slip, and Russell couldn't do enough to get his team to a par score, despite hitting four sixes.

The pitch was tinged with a generous amount of green, and the delayed start due to steady drizzle had added some moisture, revitalizing the surface. The extra bounce of the ball caused some trouble for the batters, leading to Litton Das miscuing a pull and getting dismissed by Mukesh.
Nitish Rana was also dismissed by Ishant, as the ball he bowled had a significant bounce, causing Rana to misjudge his lofted shot. However, the wicket that proved to be the turning point of the game was Rinku's slog sweep.
The ball bounced a bit more than expected, resulting in a top edge that flew at a comfortable height for Lalit Yadav to take the catch at deep square leg.
In conclusion, DC's victory was a team effort, with their bowling and batting coming together when it mattered the most. Ishant and Warner played crucial roles in the Powerplay, and Axar guided the team over the line despite his injury.
